Hear from Shannon Best the artist behind the Kilung Morunbal Jum, “Death by Smoke” sculpture

Last week, Indigenous leaders and tobacco control experts from across Oceania gathered on the Gold Coast to plan an end to tobacco harm.

The Kilung Morunbal Jum, “Death by Smoke” sculpture was unveiled as part of the conference and was commissioned by ANU’s Tobacco Free research group and created by artists Shannon Best and Frederick Beil.

Commercial tobacco use is responsible for over half of all First Peoples deaths in Australians aged 45 and over, and more than a third (37%) of all First Peoples of all ages.

The sculpture addresses this alarming issue and we have exclusive footage of Shannon Best discussing his inspiration behind the sculpture.
